Why Colombia?
Located in the far north of South America, with 441,000 square miles of land, Colombia is about the combined size of Texas and California. With a very diverse topography, Colombia has coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, the three Andes Mountain ranges that run along its backbone and the Amazon rainforest. Colombia's 48 million people live mainly in cities and towns along the Caribbean coast, in the mountains and in the savannah of Bogotá.
Colombia is the second most biodiverse country in the world, with climates ranging from warm and tropical (80-90 F) on the Caribbean coast, to a spring climate (70-80F) climate in several cities in the Andes Mountains, to cooler temperatures (60 F) in the capital city of Bogotá.
Located just north of the equator, Colombia enjoys 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness with very little variation during the year. It has no daylight-saving time and being so close to the equator, the probability of being hit by hurricanes is practically nonexistent.
The country has no official seasons, so the weather is essentially the same every day of the year. However, there are some months that are drier or rainier than others, but heavy rains rarely last more than a couple of hours a day.
Colombia is a solid and strong democracy, with a great tradition within the region.
Not convinced that moving to Colombia is for you? Nearly 60,000 U.S. expats have emigrated to Colombia and this number continues to grow. Forbes rated Colombia as one of the best places to visit, while the New York Times listed Colombia as the second most attractive country to visit in the world.
Citizens of the UK, Canada and USA can stay in Colombia for 180 days out of a calendar year on a simple tourist visa. Americans get a 90-day visa upon arrival, with the option to extend it for another 90 days.
Moving to Colombia doesn't necessarily mean being away from family and friends. If you need to fly home for a friend's wedding or to spend Christmas with the family, there are several non-stop, 2–3-hour flights from Colombia's major cities.
